Leadership Lessons I Learnt from a Drive in Dense Fog

Winters are coming in the Indian Subcontinent. In Northern India, the winters are welcome by dense fogs. Sometimes the visibility is so low that you can't even see the hood of your car while driving.

Recently, I was driving to some place in dense fog and while driving through the way, I had a realization and certain leadership lessons got carved in my mind.

1. Leadership is about taking risks.

In my perspective, driving in dense fog is in itself a big risk. You gotta be a risk taker to actually go out there and drive. Don't believe me? Try doing it yourself.

You palms getting sweaty when you can't see even the next 10 metres on the road. All your attentions are ought to be on the road.

Leadership is also the same. To be ale to stand up for what you believe in takes a lot of guts and you have to take risks to get the job done. It would feel terrifying to even take the initiative. Your pulse will rise, every moment would be of extreme anxiety and palms will sweat.

It's Hard. It's Tough. But It's Definitely Worth It.

2. Leadership is about finding your own path.

While driving in dense fog, where you can't even see the road ahead, you have to make way for yourself. You can either take the reference of the trees around you or the road side markings (if you can see them).

One advantage for me was that I had traveled on that road many times before, so some land marks had helped to see the clearer view of the road in my hand. Sometimes I'd even follow a truck in front of me, because of which the fog got scattered but that limited my speed to the truck's speed.

What I'm trying to say here is that when you have to be on a path where you can't see the road, try carving your own path and sometimes it's not bad to take the help of others. But, never limit yourself to what others know and think.

Go out and Drive your own way.

3. Leadership is about making way for others.

This is definitely true and I knew about it even before I started writing for this blog and in fact, driving. When I was driving and tried to find the road on my own, I was driving at a meager speed of 40-50 km/h. I noticed that many cars and other vehicles started following me. Not all of them stayed behind me, some did overtake me (which didn't make me so happy, honestly.)

Leadership is not about big titles and having people behind you working for a cause or a company or anything. Rather, the basic essence of leadership is to help people achieve their own goals.

You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help other people get what they want.

4. Leadership is about pushing your limits.

As I just wrote about, while driving, sometimes I followed a truck to make my path easier, but that limited me to that truck's speed. To make it on my own pace and way, I had to take risk and push my limits of my own awareness.

Easier path is always comfortable but you have to make a choice between the right path and the easy path.

That's what leadership also signifies.

To be able to push out of your comfort zone. It feels very hard and difficult at first but afterwards, it will surely change you as how you see yourself and your limits will vanish.

Comfort Zone is a beautiful place but nothing ever grows there.

It's not that I always drive in the fog and come up with a blog post. It was just that my sense of perception and my awareness were heightened that I realized what I shared right now.

If you've ever had such similar epiphany in your life ever, please feel free to share. I'd love to know.
